Formula

Cooper: VO₂ max = (distance in m − 504.9) ÷ 44.73

Alternative methods use the published Rockport regression or 15.3 × maximum heart rate ÷ resting heart rate.

Calculation steps

  • Normalize weight, distance, time, and heart-rate inputs.
  • Apply only the selected field-test equation.
  • Convert the relative estimate to METs and approximate absolute oxygen consumption.

Worked example

Covering 2,400 m in 12 minutes estimates about 42.4 ml/kg/min, or 12.1 MET.

Assumptions

  • Cooper requires a maximal 12-minute effort on a measured course.
  • Rockport requires a one-mile brisk walk and immediate heart rate.
  • The heart-rate ratio is a rough shortcut and measured maximum is preferable.
  • Laboratory gas analysis is the reference method.
