Formula

Sealant volume = joint length × cross-sectional area

Rectangle, triangle and ellipse factors are calculated separately, then waste is applied before package rounding.

Calculation steps

  • Convert joint dimensions to meters.
  • Calculate each cross-sectional area.
  • Multiply by run length and quantity.
  • Apply waste and round to whole packages.
  • Calculate optional backer-rod spools and cost.

Worked example

A 10 m rectangular joint measuring 10 mm × 5 mm requires 0.5 L before waste.

Assumptions

  • Joint dimensions are uniform within each group.
  • Package volume is usable nominal volume.
  • The same waste factor applies to sealant and backer rod.
  • Whole packages and spools are rounded up.
  • Joint sizing and product compatibility are outside scope.
