How to use this calculator
- 1Add each tiled surface and subtract known exclusions.
- 2Choose manufacturer coverage or entered application-rate mode.
- 3Record the trowel profile and any back-buttering allowance.
- 4Enter package size, waste and optional package price.
Formula
Packages = adjusted net area ÷ package coverage
Net area is increased by entered back-buttering and waste factors, then rounded up to whole packages.
Calculation steps
- Combine project areas.
- Subtract excluded area.
- Apply back-buttering and waste factors.
- Use manufacturer coverage or entered mass rate.
- Round up to whole packages and calculate optional cost.
Worked example
A net 20 m² surface with 10% back-buttering and 10% waste requires planning coverage for 24.2 m².
Assumptions
- Coverage and application rate come from the selected product.
- Trowel selection is recorded but does not silently change coverage.
- Areas do not overlap.
- Whole packages are rounded up.
- Substrate preparation, bond suitability and mortar selection are outside scope.

Frequently asked questions
Which mode should I use?
Use manufacturer coverage when exact product data is available; use application rate only when mass per area is stated.
Does trowel size change the calculation?
Not automatically. Enter the matching product coverage to avoid false precision.
What is back-buttering allowance?
An explicit additional material percentage for mortar applied to tile backs.
Are packages rounded up?
Yes, purchase quantity is always whole packages.
Does it choose an adhesive?
No. Confirm tile, substrate and environment compatibility separately.
