How to use this calculator

  1. 1Choose the start and end dates and decide whether the later boundary should count.
  2. 2Select a weekend pattern or customize the non-working weekdays.
  3. 3Add project holidays, set hours per workday, and calculate the working-day total.

Formula

Business days = counted calendar days − weekend days − in-range weekday holidays

Full weeks are counted by the selected weekend pattern, remaining dates are checked individually, and only holidays that fall on an otherwise working day are subtracted.

Calculation steps

  • Validate and chronologically order both date-only inputs.
  • Apply the inclusive or exclusive boundary rule.
  • Count selected weekend weekdays across full and partial weeks.
  • Subtract unique custom holidays that are inside the interval and not already on a weekend.
  • Multiply business days by the entered hours per day.

Worked example

A Monday-through-Friday interval containing five weekdays and one custom weekday holiday returns 4 business days. At 8 hours per day, that is 32 planned work hours.

Assumptions

  • Dates are Gregorian date-only values without time zones.
  • Custom holidays are exclusions only; the calculator does not infer national, regional, religious, or company calendars.
  • A holiday on a selected weekend day is not subtracted twice.
  • Hours per day are a planning conversion and do not model shift schedules or overtime.
  • Reverse date input returns the same absolute interval with a warning.

Frequently asked questions

Are public holidays added automatically?

No. Holiday rules change by place, organization, and year, so this version uses explicit dates that remain visible and shareable.

Can Friday and Saturday be the weekend?

Yes. Choose the Friday–Saturday preset or use the custom option to select any one to six non-working weekdays.

Does a weekend holiday reduce the result twice?

No. It is reported for review but is already excluded as a weekend day.

Can I include both the first and last day?

Yes. Inclusive mode counts both boundaries; exclusive mode omits the later date.

Does this calculate payroll?

No. It only multiplies business days by hours per day. Use the work-hours and pay calculator for shifts, overtime, and gross pay.
