Countdown Calculator

Updated Aug 24, 2026 Reviewed Aug 24, 2026
Create a live, shareable countdown to an exact date-time in any IANA time zone, with stop-at-zero or count-up behavior.

Live event countdown

Choose the exact target instant

Included in shareable URL state. Avoid private information on public links.

Type a city-based IANA identifier such as Europe/London; UTC is also supported.

Used only when the chosen local time repeats or does not exist.

Recomputed from the device clock
The countdown does not accumulate one-second drift. Returning to the page immediately catches up to the current instant.

How to use this calculator

  1. 1Name the event if useful and enter its target date-time.
  2. 2Choose the event IANA time zone and what happens after zero.
  3. 3Start the live countdown, then copy, share, print, or embed it.

Formula

Remaining time = target instant − current instant

The target wall time is resolved in its IANA zone and compared with the current exact instant every second.

Calculation steps

  • Validate and resolve the target local time.
  • Read the current instant from the device clock.
  • Subtract now from the target.
  • Stop at zero or use the absolute negative duration for count-up.
  • Decompose the duration into days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Worked example

If a target is exactly 90,061 seconds away, the display shows 1 day, 1 hour, 1 minute, and 1 second.

Assumptions

  • Accuracy depends on the device clock.
  • The target uses one named IANA time zone.
  • Days in the live display are fixed 24-hour elapsed periods.
  • The event title appears in the shareable URL if entered.
  • The timer continues only while the page is active but recomputes from the clock when resumed.

Frequently asked questions

Will it keep counting after zero?

Choose count up to show elapsed time after the target; stop at zero is the default.

Does closing the browser pause it?

No stored ticking is required. Reopening the link recalculates from the current device time.

Are daylight-saving changes handled?

Yes. The target is converted to an exact instant using the selected zone rules.

Can I share the countdown?

Yes. The normal share controls preserve its validated settings in the URL.

Are countdown days calendar days?

No. Each displayed day is exactly 24 elapsed hours; use the date difference tool for date-only calendar counting.
