Formula

Speed = distance ÷ time; distance = speed × time; time = distance ÷ speed

All values are normalized to meters and seconds before the selected form of the distance–speed–time relationship is applied.

Calculation steps

  • Convert the entered distance to meters, speed to meters per second, and compound duration to seconds.
  • Rearrange distance = speed × time to solve for the selected unknown quantity.
  • Convert the result back to the selected unit and provide common metric, imperial, and nautical equivalents.

Worked example

For 120 km at 80 km/h, time = 120 ÷ 80 = 1.5 hours, which is 1 hour 30 minutes.

Assumptions

  • Speed is treated as constant, or as an average over the complete distance and elapsed time.
  • Stops must be included in the entered elapsed time if they should reduce average speed.
  • Acceleration, traffic, route geometry, elevation, and live travel conditions are not modeled.
  • A statute mile is 1,609.344 meters, an international foot is 0.3048 meter, and an international nautical mile is 1,852 meters.

Frequently asked questions

Is this instantaneous speed or average speed?

The result is constant speed for an idealized trip, or average speed when total distance is divided by total elapsed time.

Should stops be included in travel time?

Include stops when you want the overall trip average. Exclude them when you want moving speed or moving time only.

What is the difference between mph and knots?

Miles per hour uses statute miles. A knot is one international nautical mile per hour.

Why does this calculator not estimate traffic or arrival time?

It performs deterministic unit and motion calculations. Live route conditions require map and traffic data that are outside this tool’s scope.
