Formula
VAM = vertical metres gained ÷ climbing hours
Average grade uses vertical gain divided by horizontal distance; horizontal distance is derived from the entered route distance.
Calculation steps
- Convert route distance and elevation to metres.
- Use right-triangle geometry to derive horizontal distance and average grade.
- Weight distance, gain and time by repetitions, then calculate aggregate VAM and the target projection.
Worked example
An 8 km climb gaining 500 m in 40 minutes averages about 6.26% and 750 vertical metres per hour.
Assumptions
- Distance is distance travelled along the climb, not horizontal map distance.
- Time is climbing moving time and excludes descent or recovery between repeats.
- VAM is an observed rate and does not adjust for altitude, wind, surface or drafting.
- Target time assumes the entered VAM can remain constant for the full target ascent.

Frequently asked questions
Why does exact grade differ slightly from gain divided by route distance?
Road distance is the hypotenuse. Grade convention uses horizontal run, which the calculator derives geometrically.
Is higher VAM always better?
Not as a universal comparison. Grade, altitude, duration, wind, surface, drafting and measurement quality all matter.
How are hill repeats counted?
Each climb’s route distance, gain and climbing time are multiplied by its repetitions; descent and recovery are excluded.
Does target time predict a race result?
No. It is simply target elevation divided by constant target VAM.
